Symptoms

A container backup fails with the following errors:

  • prlctl backup:

    [root@vz ~]# prlctl backup 101
    backup hdd.0 progress:  4%Failed to backed up the CT: The backup command for the "101" virtual machine failed with code 25 ("Backup error"). Try to back up the virtual machine again. If the problem persists, contact the Parallels support team for assistance.
    

    The following message is logged in /var/log/parallels.log:

    F /prl_backup_client:52873:52873/ Operation failed with code 25
    
  • vzabackup:

    [root@vz ~]# vzabackup -F localhost -e 101
    Starting backup operation for node 'vz'...
    ...
    Backup operation for node 'vz' failed: Failed to perform the file backup
    Acronis Error: Module=0 Code=0, Tag=0,
    Backup failed
    

    VA Agent log file with log level 4 shows the following errors:

Backup folder is located at NFS share:

[root@vz ~]# mount | grep backup
192.168.0.101:/backup0 on /vz/backups type nfs (rw,noatime,nfsvers=3,mountproto=tcp,addr=192.168.0.101,mountaddr=192.168.0.101)

Cause

Improper NFS server configuration, which doesn't allow the backup process to lock container files.

Resolution

Three possible ways of resolution:

  1. [Preferable] Solve the issues with the NFS server, so that it allows remote locks.

  2. Remount the NFS share with "local_lock" option. The option is available for NFS v2/v3 only.

  3. [Least preferable] Remount the NFS share with "nolock" option.
