A virtual machine has been created from a template via API (e.g., it has been provisioned by OBAS) or from the command line using the following command:

~# prlctl create VMNAME --ostemplate TEMPLATENAME

It is not possible to enter such a virtual machine with prlctl enter VMNAME or manage it via API.
The following error is observed:

Error invoking external utility: Can't login in VM. Unable to open new session in this virtual machine. Make sure the latest version of Parallels Tools is installed in this virtual machine and it has finished booting.

After the corresponding template was created, a new Virtuozzo update was installed on the physical server, so the Guest Tools installed inside the template became outdated:

~# prlctl list -t
UUID DIST NAME
{5de61569-ed5a-1b49-a9d1-4b27750a933c} ubuntu Ubuntu
{937ebc47-3837-4e52-84a2-f546532352da} win-2008 Windows 2008
{f6cc9b54-e63e-4f6f-a8f4-b675079463d4} ubuntu Ubuntu 2

~# prlctl list -i 'Windows 2008' | grep Tools
GuestTools: state=installed version=4.0.5612.535050

~# prlsrvctl info | grep -E '^Version'
Version: Server 4.0.5612.577097

As can be seen in the example above, the Guest Tools version is different from the Virtuozzo version.

It is necessary to update Guest Tools inside the virtual machine template to the latest version to resolve the issue:

  1. Open Parallels Management Console.
  2. Right-click the virtual machine template and select Convert to Virtual Machine:

    Convert to virtual machine

  3. When the conversion process finishes, start the resulting virtual machine and wait until it is booted up completely.
  4. Log in to the virtual machine, uninstall Guest Tools, and restart the virtual machine when prompted.
  5. Log in to the virtual machine and click "Install Parallels Tools" on the Virtual Machine menu:

    Install Guest Tools

  6. Restart the virtual machine after the Guest Tools installation, stop it, and convert back to the template:

    Convert template to VM

  7. Verify that Guest Tools has the same build and revision number as the Parallels Server:

    ~# prlctl list -i 'Windows 2008' | grep GuestTools
    GuestTools: state=installed version=4.0.5612.577097
    ~# prlsrvctl info | grep -E '^Version'
    Version: Server 4.0.5612.577097

Note: If the template is used to provision virtual machines via OBAS, the instructions in this article can also be followed without any additional action because virtual machine templates are registered in OBAS by name.
