I changed CPU/RAM amount for my virtual machine, but the changes do not get reflected in guest OS on the fly (without guest OS reboot).

Causes & Solutions

There can be several causes to the problem:

At first, please check if your guest OS is in the list of OSes which support CPU/RAM hot-add/remove feature please consult with this article:

111216 CPU and RAM hot-add/remove support by PSBM 5

If your guest OS supports CPU/RAM hot-add/remove feature and it is a Linux VM, take a look at these three possible causes:

1.       Make sure you’ve done everything required for the new memory to be recognized by Linux OS by following this article:

111199 Hot added memory does not display in Linux guest

2.       If your VM had a little amount of free memory before you tried to hot-plug a huge amount to it, please check this article:

111279 Hot-plugged memory cannot be initialized in a Linux VM

3.       If you are trying to hot-add CPUs to a SLES 11 VM, please read this article:

111221 Hot-added CPUs are not detected in SLES 11 guests
