Some Linux-based virtual machines may do not react on graceful shutdown signals:
  • When Shutdown button is pressed in Parallels Management Console
  • When hardware settings were changed via Parallels Virtual Automation and reboot signal is set to the virtual machine
This behavior was noticed on CentOS 6 Minimal and  Ubuntu 10.04 (LTS) virtual machines, however it may be met on other Linux distributions.

Most likely guest operating system does not handle ACPI requests properly. This usually happens when packets hal and acpi are not installed.

Install hal and acpi packages with all dependencies:
On Debian-based distributions:
apt-get install hal acpid

On RedHat-based distributions:
yum install hal acpid
