After installing kernel updates on Parallels Virtuozzo Containers for Linux 4.7 or after a major upgrade, the following kernel panic is observed while booting into the new kernel:
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)


Most likely, the server is using EFI for booting and GRUB is not configured correctly.


Verify that both files:

have correct initrd line, e.g.:
title Parallels Containers Linux (2.6.32-042stab032.1)
        root (hd0,1)
        kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-042stab032.1 ro root=UUID=f19e8beb-a3b3-49b0-8064-fd05a0224924 rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_LVM rd_NO_MD rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYBOARDTYPE=pc KEYTABLE=us nomodeset crashkernel=auto rhgb quiet
