This article explains how to set up a WSUS server in order to automate application (MS Office, MS Exchange, MS Sharepoint, etc.) update installation inside containers on Parallels Virtuozzo Containers for Windows.

  1. Install the WSUS server role to any spare host available. It can be either a physical or virtual host with Windows 2008 R2 or later version of Windows installed.

  2. During the role installation, configure the WSUS instance to contain updates for the required applications only:

    choose updates

  3. Make sure NOT TO CHECK Windows updates:

    don't choose updates

  4. Install all pending WSUS updates.

Once WSUS installation is complete it is necessary to enable automatic updates inside containers and point them to the newly created WSUS server.

Connect to the Hardware Node with Parallels Virtuozzo Containers for Windows and edit the X:\vz\scripts\vz-poststart.cmd file (create if it doesn't exist). Add following lines to the file:

REM Setting Windows Update Service to start manually with empty WUServer on w2k8 and win7

set "VPSID=%1"
reg add "HKLM\vz%VPSID%\MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv" /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 0x02 /f
reg add "HKLM\vz%VPSID%\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate" /v WUServer /t REG_SZ /d "http://IP_OF_THE_NEW_WSUS" /f
reg add "HKLM\vz%VPSID%\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate" /v WUStatusServer /t REG_SZ /d "http://IP_OF_THE_NEW_WSUS" /f
reg add "HKLM\vz%VPSID%\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v UseWUServer /t REG_DWORD /d 0x01 /f
reg add "HKLM\vz%VPSID%\MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate\AU" /v NoAutoUpdate /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00 /f

NOTE: Custom Actions scripts were changed since VZU460057. If you are running PVCfW host with update level lower than VZU460057 you have to modify C:\Program Files\Parallels\Containers\BIN\on_vps_startup.cmd file - you'll need to find and alter already existing lines, identical to above-mentioned ones.

You can download the attached file vz-poststart.cmd and replace IP_OF_THE_NEW_WSUS with the proper hostname or IP address

As Windows 2008 R2 shipped with WSUS version 3.2.7600.226 it needs to be updated with in order to be compatible with fully updated clients containers.
