3. Software Requirements and Prerequisites

You can install the core components of the system on the same server where you plan to host websites, or have one dedicated server for running the system (the core server) and publish websites on separate hosting servers.

Before installing, make sure that the following requirements for the core server and publishing servers are met.

Requirements for the Core Server

Minimum Hardware Requirements

  • 500 megabytes of free disk space for installation of the core components, plus at least 300 kilobytes per each hosted site

  • 8 gigabytes of RAM

Supported Operating Systems

Parallels Presence Builder 11 Standalone can be installed on the following operating systems:

  • CentOS 5.5-5.8, 6.0-6.2 (32-bit and 64-bit)

  • Debian 6.0 (32-bit and 64-bit)

Important: SELinux must be disabled.

Required Software Components

The following software components, which are not included in the distribution package, must be additionally installed:

  • Apache web server (apache2 package)

  • sw-engine package, version 2.7 or later

  • MySQL Server, version 5.0 or later

  • mod_fcgid. This is available from the Debian 6 repositories (called libapache2-mod-fcgid), but if you want to install it on CentOS, you will need to obtain it from a third-party repository, such as, for example, the Atomicorp repository.

You can install it with the command wget -O - |sh.

  • PHP version 5.2 or later is installed.

  • PHP supports:

    • Multibyte string functions (mbstring extension)

  • In php.ini, the following directive is set: default_charset = "UTF-8"

Supported Web Browsers

  • Internet Explorer 8,9, and 10

  • Mozilla Firefox 19 and later versions

  • Safari 6 for Mac

  • Google Chrome 25 and later versions

4. Notes on Installation and Upgrade

For information and instructions on how to obtain, install, and upgrade Parallels Presence Builder 11 Standalone, please refer to the Installation and Administration Guide located at

Note: After upgrading Presence Builder from the version 11.0 to 11.1, all customizations made by editing the configuration file /usr/local/sb/config are discarded.

5. Known Problems and Limitations

  • During an installation or upgrade of Presence Builder Standalone on CentOS 6 with yum 3.2.29, users will not receive any messages from the installation scripts in the console. However, detailed information about the installation or upgrade process will be available in log files, which are kept in the directory /usr/local/sb/tmp.
Although this issue with yum does not affect the installation or upgrade in any way, we recommend that users of CentOS 6 update yum to version 3.4.3-32 or later.

  • During generation of websites in languages other than English, you may receive a site with a banner that is irrelevant to the site topic.

  • If you specify an invalid username and password upon logging in to the license management area (https://<host_name>/License), you might be taken to a blank page.

  • After publishing sites created in Safari or Opera, you might encounter some error messages in the web server's error log file. However, these errors do not affect the published websites' operability in any way.

  • When a site snapshot is created, its creation time is set according to the server's date and time.

  • Some editor pages, such as Dashboard and Design > Colors, may not entirely fit in the screens of monitors with low vertical resolution (such as 1280 x 800).

  • Safari users may encounter issues with posting comments on websites that use the Commenting module. This happens if "Authorization with a Facebook account" is selected by the webmaster in the module settings.
