How to install ASP.NET 1.1 on Windows 2008 with IIS 7.x?

To install ASP.NET 1.1 on Windows 2008 with IIS 7.x, follow these steps:

  1. Open Server Manager, go to Roles → Web Server (IIS), scroll down, and click on*Add Role Services*. There, select "IIS Metabase Compatibility" and proceed with the installation.

  2. Download .NET Framework 1.1, .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, and ASP.NET Security Update for .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 from the Microsoft website and install them in that order on the server.

  3. In Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, open the server properties (root node of the tree). In ISAPI and CGI restrictions, select "ASP.NET v1.1.4322" and click "Allow" in the actions pane.

NOTE: If the ASP.NET v1.1 ISAPI extension is not present, add it using the path C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_isapi.dll.

  1. Open the file C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\config\machine.config and add the following section entry at the end of the element, just before the closing tag:

        <section name="system.webServer" type="System.Configuration.IgnoreSectionHandler, System, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089" />

    Go to Plesk → Tools & Settings → Server Components and hit Refresh to detect ASP.NET 1.1. Verify that ASP.NET 1.1 is shown in Web Scripting section.

After that ASP.NET 1.1 will become available for use on websites.
