Symptoms

  1. RDP connection to the VM is very slow.

  2. Network traffic loss is observed.

  3. Network-related applications inside the VM report errors.

  4. Traffic shaping is enabled globally on the node.

    # egrep 'RATE|TRAF|BOUND' /etc/sysconfig/vz
    TRAFFIC_SHAPING="yes"
    TOTALRATE="*:1:20000"
    RATE="*:1:8"

Cause

Traffic rate limitation is enabled for the VM, and it received the global settings of the node (8kb/s by default).

    # sed '/<GlobalNetwork/,/<\/GlobalNetwork/!d' /var/parallels/VM_NAME.pvm/config.pvs
          <GlobalNetwork dyn_lists="DnsIPAddress SearchDomain OfflineService">
             <HostName>hostname</HostName>
             <DefaultGateway></DefaultGateway>
             <DefaultGatewayIPv6></DefaultGatewayIPv6>
             <OfflineManagementEnabled>0</OfflineManagementEnabled>
             <AutoApplyIpOnly>0</AutoApplyIpOnly>
             <NetworkRates dyn_lists="NetworkRate 1">
                <RateBound>1</RateBound>
    ==>>            <NetworkRate id="0" dyn_lists="">
    ==>>               <ClassId>1</ClassId>
    ==>>               <Rate>4000</Rate>
    ==>>            </NetworkRate>
             </NetworkRates>
          </GlobalNetwork>

Resolution

There are two ways of resolving this issue:

  1. Configure individual RATE parameters:

    /usr/sbin/vzctl setrate 1376784630 --ratebound yes --rate *:1:2000

  2. Disable rate limitation for the VM

    # egrep 'TRAF' /etc/sysconfig/vz
    TRAFFIC_SHAPING="no"
