Symptoms

Upgrade/uninstallation of PVA Agent might fail with the following error (which can be checked in the log file /var/log/pva/setup/YY.MM.DD_HH.MM.SS_pva-setup.log):

Oct 6 00:58:24 PVA postupgrade configuration : start
# Stopping vzagent service
Shutting pvaagentd: [FAILED]
# Upgrading DB
# Setting service pvaagentd --del

            stderr:
error reading information on service pvaagentd: No such file or directory
ERROR: Can't configure startup of pvaagentd

As the result, PVA Agent does not start properly or Power Panel returns the application error for any hosted container with enabled Offline Management:

Forbidden

The IP address of a physical server cannot be used with its Parallels Power Panel port number.

Do one of the following:

  • If you want to open the Parallels Virtual Automation Control Center, use the IP address of the management server with the default port number.

  • If you want to open the Parallels Power Panel, use the IP address or hostname of the Virtual Environment.

Cause

Installation of a newer version performs removal of the previous version with keeping the configuration and database files, and that removal operation could fail for some reason. This can be due to absence of the service definition file/script:

~# ls -l /etc/init.d/pvaagentd
ls: /etc/init.d/pvaagentd: No such file or directory
~#

Normally it should be a symbolic link pointing to /opt/pva/agent/bin/pvaagentd.

Resolution

Perform full reinstall of PVA Agent using the steps for the case with limited Internet connection from this article - (re)installation of PVA Agent.

During uninstallation, check and resolve all errors. E.g. the problem might be in absence of the service definition in /etc/init.d/, by default there should be the following:

[root@pvc47 ~]# ls -al /etc/init.d/pvaagentd
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 27 Aug 19  2011 /etc/init.d/pvaagentd -> /opt/pva/agent/bin/pvaagent
[root@pvc47 ~]#

If this link is absent then the following error occurs during uninstallation:

Oct 6 00:58:24 PVA postupgrade configuration : start
# Stopping vzagent service
Shutting pvaagentd: [FAILED]
# Upgrading DB
# Setting service pvaagentd --del

            stderr:
error reading information on service pvaagentd: No such file or directory
ERROR: Can't configure startup of pvaagentd

Create this link and redo uninstallation:

~# ln -s /opt/pva/agent/bin/pvaagent /etc/init.d/pvaagentd
~# chkconfig pvaagentd on
~# ./pva-setup --uninstall
