Symptoms

  • Creating a backup of VM in PVA fails with the error as follows:

Operation with the Virtual Machine "vs92021_VNCert_117.68_vhphuc@vncert.vn" is finished with errors: Can't backup VM. Unable to set the required permissions for the directory "/vz/backups//{f04d233c-765c-4946-9229-0c1dcf3ec387}" on the backup server. Please wait for a while and try again. If the problem persists, contact the server administrator for assistance.

  • The backup storage is located on a NFS share and mounted to /vz/backups/.

Cause

By default, a NFS server exports its shares with the option root_squash which means that the user root is replaced with nfsnobody with limited/unprivileged access.

This option should be disabled so that PVA could change ownership of files to root and create backups.

Resolution

This feature with replacing the owner should be disabled, using one of the following:

  • change the export options of the share on the NFS server's side; for a NFS server based on a Linux system, add the option no_root_squash in the file /etc/exports and reload the configuration:

    # service nfs reload

  • remount the NFS share with the option no_root_squash:

    # mount -o remount,rw,no_root_squash /vz/backups
