Symptoms

While backing up a Virtual Machine you might get following warning:

[root@pcs ~]# prlctl backup MyTestVM
Backing up the VM MyTestVM
Unable to synchronize the virtual machine's file system. The backup process will continue without synchronization. To avoid this problem in the future, make sure that Parallels Tools are properly installed in the virtual machine.
backup hdd.0 progress: 100%
The VM has been successfully backed up with backup id {2e9e6d55-4ae2-413a-b433-26eaa9f42fbe}.2.

That is happening for a Virtual Machine which is running on EFI. This can be checked in a following way:

[root@pcs ~]# prlctl list MyTestVM -i | grep EFI
EFI boot: on

Cause

Currently there is no mechanism to freeze Virtual Machine's file system during the backup if it is running on EFI. This functionality will be implemented in future, in scope of a bug PSBM-21377.

Resolution

Ignore the warning.

If possible, create the backup of the VM in stopped state.
