  • The Virtual Machine is running Ubuntu 10.04.
  • Parallels Tools are installed and network settings are configured by means of management tools (CLI, SDK or PVA).
  • Network Manager is getting installed inside the VM (e.g. it can be bundled with Desktop packages).
  • After installation, network settings cannot be changed: the operation completes successfully, but the old settings still persist inside the VM. With removed default gateway, it may lead to a total network unavailability of the VM.

After the installation of Network Manager, all network-related settings are completed through it. But if /etc/network/interfaces file was modified earlier, the Network Manager configuration is discarded by Ubuntu. The issue is specific to 10.04 version of Ubuntu.

Remove the network interface settings from /etc/network/interfaces (all except lo) and reboot the VM.
