Check Parallels Tools installation log for exact error
In Windows OS: C:\WINDOWS\Temp\parallels-tools-setup-xxx.log
- In Linux OS: /var/log/parallels-tools-install.log
For Windows Guest OS
parallels-tools-setup-xxx.log will be collected along with VM report:
# prlctl problem-report VM_NAME --send
In case you cannot locate the log in
C:\Windows\Temp or this folder does not exist - > it is the root cause of the installation issue: check permissions for that folder or create it manually.
Reading Parallels Tools installation log
Go to the end of file. Make sure that the last string contains actual date & time from Windows:
"=== Verbose logging stopped: 7/4/2011 14:13:04 ==="
Return code 3010in one of the previous strings means OK. Guest Tools was installed successfully.
Return code 1603means 'failed'.
error code 1603 (0x643) Fatal error during installation means only that something is wrong, so it should be ignored – most probably the log contains other more informative error message.
At this step search for “
DIFXAPP: ERROR” or “
HRESULT” entries, that would be the main error.
Sometimes the Guest Tools installation stops in the middle of the process and then rolls back without an error message. Guest Tools installation wizard may just warn you that installation failed and reboot is needed.
If there is neither
DIFXAPP: ERROR nor
HRESULT error found in the log, search for the first "
Rollback:" occurrence and look at error message some string above.
All error codes that could be found in Guest Tools installation log are regular Windows error codes, so they could be found at msdn.microsoft.com
