Question

I am running Virtuozzo Containers for Windows in a virtual machine. Is it safe to run Microsoft System Preparation tool in a virtual machine and clone it afterwards?

Answer

Yes, Virtuozzo Containers for Windows supports sysprep. However, few actions should be performed in order to remove the duplicate settings:

  • All network settings should be wiped out before running sysprep (IP settings and hostnames for containers and Virtuozzo Containers node).

  • Environment ID for the hardware node should be regenerated after cloning sysprepped Virtuozzo Containers installation.

  • Environment IDs for the containers should be regenerated after cloning sysprepped Virtuozzo Containers installation.

  • New license should be installed.

NOTE1: Usually there is no need to run sysprep on Virtuozzo Containers installation with existing containers, since containers can easily be created using native tools. Nevertheless, sysprep works on Virtuozzo Containers with containers as well.

NOTE2: Virtruozzo Containers for Windows does not support sysprep inside the containers.
