Symptoms

Pstroage event log is flooded with following errors:

[root@cs2 ~]# pstorage -c cst1 get-event | grep -i license
03-12-14 05:18:45.576 MDS ERR: License automatic update failed, the update-license command exited with code 255

03-12-14 17:15:23.582 MDS ERR: License automatic update failed, the update-license command exited with code 255

However, license is active, and update date is in the future:

[root@cs2 ~]# date
Wed Dec  3 17:57:05 EET 2014
[root@cs2 ~]# pstorage -c cst1 view-license | egrep 'date|status'
        status="ACTIVE"
        start_date="11/13/2014 02:00:00"
        issue_date="11/14/2014 22:52:18"
        license_update_date="12/06/2014 02:00:00"

Cause

update-license command returns 0 exit code (success) only when new license was downloaded from KA and installed. If currently installed license is the same as the one available in KA, update-license will return 255 exit code. In this situation logs indicate that license does not need to be updated, hence these messages are harmless and it is safe to ignore them.

These operations were always taking place and logged to mds.log, but since Update 8 they are logged to the event log as well, and operation result might be confusing. The issue has been recognized as a bug. Its internal ID is #PSBM-30459.

Resolution

The issue with unnecessary messages in log files has been fixed since Virtuozzo 6.0 Update 8 Hotfix 3. Install the available updates:

# yum update

Since the hotfix, error messages should appear only in case of the required license update failure.
