Server runs out of disk space and certain domains have exceptionally big error.log files. Deleting the large files does not release disk space.

This happens when deleted files are still in opened status. Despite deleting the log file, disk space usage keeps showing high value.

  1. Discover deleted files which are still opened:

    sudo /usr/sbin/lsof | grep deleted
  2. Force closing of these files either by logging out of the session, or by restarting the service that uses the file.
