Customer added the following entry to crontab to syncronize time on the server every 5 minute:

5 * * * * ntpdate -u

Howver it does not work. Server time not getting synchronized with NTP server time due to misplaced cron entries.

Misplaced cron entries in crontab file caused by incorrect syntax.

  1. Create a file /usr/crontime.

  2. Add the following line to that file:

    ntpdate -d -u >/dev/null 2>&1
  3. Make it executable

    #chmod +x /usr/crontime
  4. Edit crontab entry as follows:

    5 * * * * /usr/crontime

This entry means that the cron will be executed every 5 minutes and the server time will be synchronized with NTP server.
