When a container or a virtual machine snapshot is created, it takes a long time, up to several minutes, making the VE completely unavailable for this period: it does not respond to ping and it is not possible to access web content, mail, etc. The VM is completely frozen.

At the same time, the CT/VM is configured with a large amount of RAM limit.

During the operation of creating a snapshot, the state of the virtual environment is saved, which implies writing a memory dump at the moment of snapshot creation. In case the amount of used memory by the VE is large, the procedure may take a long time, depending on the speed of the underlying block device.

There's no direct solution for the issue, since it is an expected behavior.

Possible workarounds are:

  • If possible, restart the VM before creating the snapshot in order to free up the used memory.
  • Stop the most memory-consuming processes inside the VE.
