Symptoms

'SMART warning' message is shown in the pstorage top output:

SMART

Cause

One of the physical disks is in pre-failure condition.

Starting from Virtuozzo 6.0.7-2195, the S.M.A.R.T monitoring was implemented. Pstorage collects the data from the S.M.A.R.T monitoring tools and warn the administrator if something goes wrong with the disks.

The S.M.A.R.T. warning is shown when at least one of the following counters is nonzero:

"005" - Reallocated Sector Count
"196" - Reallocated Event Count
"197" - Current Pending Sector Count
"198" - Offline Uncorrectable

To find the disk in pre-failure state, press 'd' in pstorage top:

Use the smartctl tool to get more information:

[root@pcs36 ~]# smartctl -a /dev/sde | egrep 'VALUE|Reallocated|Pending|Uncorrectable'
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 100 100 010 Pre-fail Always - 1
196 Reallocated_Event_Cou 0x0032 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0
197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 0
198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 0

In this particular case Reallocated Sector Count value is 1.
