MySQL is not starting after upgrade from 5.1 to 5.5 version.

The following error can be found in /var/log/mysqld.log:

160217 0:11:50 [ERROR] /usr/libexec/mysqld: unknown option '--skip-locking'
160217 0:11:50 [ERROR] Aborting

Unknown option in mysql config file is specified.

  1. Comment skip-locking option in /etc/my.cnf in [mysqld] section:

    # grep skip-locking /etc/my.cnf
  2. Start mysql service:

    # service mysqld start
  3. If the issue persists, check whether the following files exist. They can contain the same option. Simply rename the files.

    # /root/.my.cnf
    # mv /root/.my.cnf /root/.my.cnf.bk
    # /etc/mysql/my.cnf
    # mv /etc/mysql/my.cnf /etc/mysql/my.cnf.bk
