Parallels Virtuozzo Containers for Linux and Parallels Cloud Server

Server administration and maintenance

Since Linux kernel 2.6.24, it mounts file-systems with the relatime option if it is supported by the file-system.

That is, starting from PVC 4.7 and in PSBM 5, PCS 6, this is the default option when Ext3/4 is mounted.

This means also that for ploop-based containers of PCS 6, this is the default option as well, and there is no need to set it specifically.

  • What is the BURST_CPULIMIT?

BURST_CPULIMIT is a parameter according to the container that the CPU is limited by if its usage is more than BURST_CPU_AVG_USAGE. For more information, please refer to this documentation.

  • Is Open vSwitch supported?

It is supported in Parallels Cloud Server; the version of vSwitch is 1.6. By default, support for Open vSwitch is disabled and Linux bridges are used instead. Find more information in #115685.

  • How do I enable iptables modules for a container?

It is not possible to enable an iptables module inside a particular container; however, you can enable it on the Hardware Node and allow the module on a per-container basis: #113056

Migration

Common problems and fixes

  • Migration with NFS partition

It is not possible to implement online migration when the /vz partition is located over NFS. You can find detailed steps in #111855.

  • CVE-2013-2094 vulnerability in Linux kernel

A Linux kernel vulnerability (CVE-2013-2094) that may allow local users to gain root privileges was recently identified. Find more information at #116086.

  • Backup Problems

There can be problems with backing up containers that have a huge number of inodes; it can be fixed by increasing timeout limits #8133. It is also possible that a container is 32-bit, making it impossible to back up this number of inodes. See #112397.

  • Migration with ISO image failed

When you try to migrate your virtual machine, you have the following error:

Failed to migrate the VM: You are unable to migrate the virtual machine. The virtual machine or the source and destination servers do not comply with the migration requirements. Disconnect or remove the device testvm1 from the virtual machine configuration and try again ("/usr/bin/prlctl failed, exitcode=255"). As a workaround, eject the image and try the migration again.

  • How do I manage bridged networks?

    To see available bridged networks:

    C:\> vznetcfg net list

To create a new bridged network:

    C:\> vznetcfg net new %NETWORK_NAME% %HOST_IFACE_MAC%

To add the host interface to a bridged network:

C:\> vzctl set %CTID% --save --ipadd %IPADDR%/%NETMASK% --network %NETWORK_NAME% --nettype bridged
