Parallels Plesk Panel Backup/Restore functionality was redesigned in Plesk version 9. Prior restoration data with the use of an old backup file is necessary to convert the backup file to the new format.

To convert the backup to the version 9 format, you need to log in to the Parallels Plesk Panel server as administrator (for Windows) or root (for Unix/Linux) and use the Plesk utility pre9-backup-convert.exe or pre9-backup-convert accordingly. If you do not have administrative access to the server, you need to contact your hosting provider for assistance.

Parallels Plesk Panel Windows supports two backup format versions.

The pre9-backup-convert.exe command line tool is used to convert old Plesk backup files (any version) to the new format for version 9.
Enter the following command to use the tool:

"%plesk_bin%\pre9-backup-convert.exe" --source=<old backup file> --destination=< backup repository>

... replacing <old backup file> with the full path to the backup file that is going to be converted
<backup repository> with the path to the backup repository where the converted backup will be extracted to (can be changed in Plesk Reconfigurator)

The converted backup is placed in the Plesk backup repository and becomes available for restoration in Plesk, Home, Backup Manager.

Parallels Plesk Panel Unix/Linux has a different backup format for versions 7.x, 8.x, and 9.x.

backup-convert allows the conversion of Plesk version < 8 backups to version 8.
Refer to the following article for conversion instructions:

pre9-backup-convert allows the conversion of Plesk version 8 backups to version 9.
Run the following command to use the utility:

~# $PRODUCT_ROOT_D/bin/pre9-backup-convert convert --directory=$DUMP_D<old backup file>

... replacing <old backup file> with the full path to the backup file that is going to be converted.

It is recommended that you extract the converted backup to the backups directory in $DUMP_D. Backups extracted to the directory are accessible and available for restoration through Home -> Backup Manager -> Server Repository.

To convert a backup created with Parallels Plesk Panel version 7 or prior versions, you should first convert the backup to version 8 with backup-convert, and then convert it to version 9 with pre9-backup-convert.

To convert a split backup to version 9, you should first merge the parts together, and then put single backup file in the input.
