Parallels Plesk Panel versions 7.x and 8.x manage one MTA, QMail, and Parallels Plesk Panel 9 and higher versions work with QMail and Postfix MTA.

It is not recommended to have Sendmail installed on a server with Parallels Plesk Panel. The mail service works on its own, with own configuration, and is not managed through Parallels Plesk Panel.

If you have it installed, make sure it is configured as follows.

1. On the Parallels Plesk Panel server, Sendmail should just be a link to Plesk MTA.

For QMail MTA on Parallels Plesk Panel version 8.x, 9.x, 10.x:

~# ls -l /usr/sbin/sendmail
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Nov 18 10:26 /usr/sbin/sendmail -> /etc/alternatives/mta
~# ls -l /etc/alternatives/mta
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Jan 29 09:34 /etc/alternatives/mta -> /var/qmail/bin/sendmail
~# rpm -qf /var/qmail/bin/sendmail

For Postfix MTA on Parallels Plesk Panel version 9.x, 10.x:

~# ls -l /usr/sbin/sendmail
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Nov 18 10:26 /usr/sbin/sendmail -> /etc/alternatives/mta
~# ls -l /etc/alternatives/mta
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Mar  2 15:15 /etc/alternatives/mta -> /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix
~# rpm -qf /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix

Verify the packages.

2. Make sure Sendmail is not started.

The service is disabled in all runlevels:

~# chkconfig --list sendmail
sendmail          0:off   1:off   2:off   3:off    4:off    5:off    6:off

You may delete the script in all runlevels with:

~# chkconfig --del sendmail

Remove the executable bit from the Sendmail starting script to prevent its startup:

~# chmod -x /etc/init.d/sendmail

3. To prevent Sendmail from intersecting SMTP, remove the Sendmail configuration file from xinet.d.

Move it to another place:

~# mv /etc/xinet.d/sendmail /some/direcotry

For details, see the following article: [Info] Parallels Plesk Panel is overloaded with spam messages because it works as open relay

4. Alternatively, you can reinstall all mail packages forcibly.

During the installation of Plesk packages, overwrite the Sendmail configuration.

You may get a list of all Plesk mail packages with the "rpm -qa" command on Red Hat-like operating systems and "dpkg -l" on Debian.
