SymptomsThere is a virtual machine with Windows Server 2000, 2003 or 2008 operating system installed. The server is configured as Terminal server.
Parallels Tools Installer fails at the very beginning of running installation script. The alike error is displayed:
Another instance of the installer program is already running or you do not have appropriate rights to run the installer. Please exit the other instance or contact your administrator.
CauseThere are 2 different ways to run a Terminal server: Install Mode (special installation mode to install applications for multi-user use. The mode disables user registry and .INI file mappings, which means each user running an application would share the same .INI file or registry entry, instead of having them on a per-user basis) and Execute Mode (for running the applications installed).
Routinely the server runs in Execute mode, but one must put a Terminal Services server in Install mode to install or remove programs on the server.
ResolutionFirst query the current application mode. To do this:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type
change user /queryApplication EXECUTE mode is enabled.
If you see the same output as given above, this means that you need to switch Terminal Services to Install Mode.
C:\Users\Administrator>change user /install
and press ENTER. The following message appears:
User session is ready to install applications.
After Parallels Tools are installed do not forget to switch back to Execute mode with the command
C:\Users\Administrator>change user /execute
